Fall is in Session
As the leaves begin to change color and the temperature starts to drop, what better way to live our best outside life than with new, vibrant landscaping?
Fall is also a great time for new plantings and festive displays to complement your landscape. Whether sitting on the patio, playing with our children or decorating our homes for Halloween, we welcome the bright colors and new plantings Fall has to offer. As we look to enjoy the cooler days ahead, here are the top fall trends we hope to see this season.
Pumpkins, gourds, and ornamental corn are colorful pieces to brighten your entryway, patio, and stairway outside. Coming in a variety of colors, shapes, and sizes, they form amazing installations when grouped or used as additions to existing planters.
For a classic autumn look, try arranging some small pumpkins on your front stoop alongside some fall foliage like cornstalks or dried wheat stalks. Or get festive with Halloween decorations by carving spooky faces into your jack-o'-lanterns and placing them around your porch or yard. For something a little more unique, try painting your pumpkins in fun patterns or using them as planters for fall flowers like mums or pansies. However you choose to decorate with them, they will add a bit of pumpkin spice to your home this autumn!

Nothing says "fall" like colorful blooms dotting the landscape and trees for additional shade around your home. Colorful staples that grow well during this time, such as Snapdragons, come in a variety of colors including yellow, orange, pink, and purple. Other good choices include crotons, petunias, and begonias.
Add some tall statement pieces like hibiscus or bay laurel for extra drama! Evergreens such as shortleaf pines and American Hollys work well in the Houston area, along with Japanese Maple and Mexican Bush Sage. Shade-loving annuals such as impatiens add an extra layer of color beneath trees. But be sure to add mulch around newly planted trees; this will help hold its moisture.
And for our horticulturist at heart, don't forget that cool weather annual vegetables such as kale, lettuce, and cabbage can also liven up gardens in the fall months.
Though we look to enjoy the current weather, deep-root fertilization and aeration services help to plan for the winter ahead. Aeration services remove small tubes of soil and cover them with a thin layer of compost to feed the grass and roots. This also serves to break up any hardened soil from our long, hot summers and to encourage root growth for a thicker, healthier lawn for Spring. Deep root fertilization helps to promote growth and ensures that plants are getting the nutrients they need to survive winter.
These services are especially important for large bushes and shrubs, as they can be more susceptible to damage from the cold weather. By aerating and fertilizing now, you can rest assured that your plants will be healthy and vigorous when Spring arrives.
